Advisory for Biometric-Based Aadhaar Authentication and Document Verification for GST Registration Applicants of Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh

We wish to inform you of recent developments regarding the GST registration process that may impact your application. The following points outline key updates pertaining to biometric-based Aadhaar authentication and document verification for GST registration applicants in Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh:

Key Updates:

  1. Amendment to CGST Rules:
    Rule 8 of the CGST Rules, 2017 has been amended to allow the identification of applicants via biometric-based Aadhaar authentication on the GST portal. The process involves taking a photograph of the applicant and verifying the original documents uploaded with the application.
  2. Rollout in Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh:
    This functionality, developed by GSTN, has been officially rolled out in Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh starting January 28th, 2025.
  3. Document Verification and Appointment Booking:
    After submitting the GST registration application (Form GST REG-01), applicants will receive one of the following options via email:
    • Link for OTP-based Aadhaar Authentication OR
    • Link to Book an Appointment: This will guide the applicant to visit a GST Suvidha Kendra (GSK) for biometric-based Aadhaar authentication and document verification.
  4. Proceeding with OTP-based Aadhaar Authentication:
    If you receive the OTP-based Aadhaar authentication link, you may proceed with the registration process as per the existing guidelines.
  5. Appointment for Biometric Authentication and Document Verification:
    If you receive the link for booking an appointment, you must schedule a visit to the designated GSK, using the provided link.
  6. Appointment Booking Availability:
    The appointment booking feature is now available for applicants from Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh.
  7. Confirmation of Appointment:
    Once an appointment is booked, you will receive a confirmation email. This email serves as confirmation of your scheduled visit to the GSK.
  8. Documents Required at the GSK:
    At your scheduled appointment, you must bring the following:
    • A copy (hard/soft) of the appointment confirmation email.
    • Jurisdiction details as provided in the intimation email.
    • Original Aadhaar Card and PAN Card.
    • Original documents uploaded with your GST registration application.
  9. Biometric Authentication and Document Verification:
    Biometric authentication and document verification will be conducted at the GSK for all individuals included in the GST registration application.
  10. Timeline for Biometric Verification:
    You must schedule your appointment for biometric verification within the period specified in the intimation email. The Application Reference Number (ARN) will be generated only after biometric authentication and document verification are completed.
  11. GSK Operational Hours:
    The operational hours and working days of the GSKs will follow the guidelines issued by the local administration in your state.
